Get Rid of Bathroom Mold & Mildew

Posted on: September 18th, 2017 by Derek Barmer No Comments

It’s the room where you get clean… but the bathroom itself is usually very dirty! With all of that water, come mold and mildew. Not only is it unsightly, but it an also be a hazard to your health and your home in large amounts. What are your choices if you don’t want to use harsh bleach? What other contributing bathroom issues do you need to look for?

Hot water with some soap and baking soda can remove mold and mildew. Mix one teaspoon of liquid soap with one cup of baking soda to make a paste, and add essential oils for a nice scent if you’d like. You can also mix a little bit of bleach in a spray bottle and use that as a finishing touch.

Vinegar is another item you probably already have in your home that is a great cleaning agent. Put white vinegar in a spray bottle and spray the area. Wait an hour, and then scrub. In addition, if you regularly spray vinegar on a surface prone to mold, it will help prevent it from growing.

Hydrogen peroxide in a dark spray bottle (to keep its effectiveness) can clean up mold and mildew. Simply spray it, leave for at least 20 minutes, and wipe clean. You can also add a bit of vinegar too.

While you’re cleaning up, take a look around your bathroom to see where mold and mildew might hide— like that cute whale faucet cover for your kids! Also, see if there are leaks that need to be addressed or if you’d benefit from adding an exhaust fan. Take steps to prevent major problems in the future.

Outdoor Kitchens

A great way to enjoy the outdoors is to step up your outdoor cooking game. What are some things to know before you undertake this big project?

An outdoor kitchen area can cost several thousand dollars, depending on what you want. A basic setup will typically include at least an island with counter and gas grill.

Some of the first things to think about are the weather and the weight of the appliances. For example, tile or marble flooring can get very slippery with rainwater or drink spills. You also want to make sure your flooring can hold up all of the weight.

Location is also crucial. Make sure smoke will not blow into your home from the grill. Look for an area that is easy to access, goes with the traffic flow in your yard, and isn’t near anything flammable. Also consider any future plans. Will you add a pool or a garden later on? These are all important things to consider.

Another consideration is how much room you’ll want. At the very least, you’ll need space on the sides of the grill for plates, etc. Will you want a sitting area or is there a separate table? Will more than one family member want to prepare food/cook at the same time?

Storage is also important. You’ll want enough space for all of the items you’ll regularly use. Keep in mind whether or not you’ll use the kitchen in the colder months or only in the summer. Waterproof, easy-to-clean materials such as concrete are best.

Appliances will also need to be made of weatherproof material such as stainless steel. When thinking about appliances, you’ll also need to consider water supply and electrical connections. An outdoor sink will need to be hooked up to a yard hose or the house’s water supply. It is best to have a plumber take on this work. An electrician should also make sure everything in your outdoor kitchen is up to code. A professional would also need to be called if you want a plumbed gas line for the grill.

Summer Roof Maintenance

Posted on: June 4th, 2017 by Derek Barmer No Comments

Summer Roof Maintenance from Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing, and Electrical in North CarolinaThis is a great time of year to get outside and inspect your roof and do any summer roof maintenance projects that are needed. Not only is it warm, but also maintenance now will help you get ready for the tumultuous fall and winter months.

First, look from the ground for damage such as loose shingles, moss, algae, and also any debris.

Use a ladder to get up on the roof and clean up moss or algae with soap and water and a scrub brush. A cloudy day is the best time to do this not only to protect your own skin, but so the solution doesn’t dry out quickly. It is not recommended to use a strong pressure washer as it can damage the shingles.

Again, up on the ladder, check the flashing (metal stripping) around the chimney, vents, or ridge. These areas are where the majority of water damage comes from as water can seep through if they are damaged or worn.

Clean out the gutters. This should be done twice a year. Leaves braches and all kinds of debris can get stuck in there—and its the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes! Be aware of any stinging insects while doing this. If you see that the gutters have become loose, you can tighten them up with a wrench.

Trim back any tree branches hanging over the roof to prevent them from damaging it, and to prevent animals from damaging your roof as well.

Lastly, it is not a great idea to put heavy decorative items on your roof. If you have these items you may consider taking them down to extend the life of your roof.
