Set Up for Odd Shaped Rooms

Posted on: November 27th, 2017 by Derek Barmer No Comments

It is more or less impossible to find the perfect house. So, for many of us, we are stuck with one oddly shaped room in the house that we don’t know how to set up and decorate.

How can you work with the shape? Take note of where your cable outlet and electrical outlets are located. (Also look for the phone jack if you have a home phone.) This will dictate many of your furniture and set up choices.

Look for lighting. Windows and overhead lights will be your starting points. Then, if you need more light, look for the outlets. Lighting will help determine you set up, as you’ll want more light in reading areas or spaces where people will gather. You may also want a variety of lighting options to change the mood of the room as needed.

If you have a fireplace, it is often a good idea to make that a focal point. It doesn’t have to be the only focal point in a very large room, but rather can be the center of a cozy gathering area.

Look for a space that you can make into a conversation area. Don’t line up the furniture along the walls. This is particularly important if you have a very large or oddly shaped living room. You can make separate the room into two spaces used for different activities, such as watching TV, reading, or sitting with guests. Some easy ways to do this are using furniture, such as a bookcase turned on its side (use it for display) or a couch. You can also use a rug to make a certain part of the room feel cozy and separate. (Gather the furniture around the rug.)

Place your anchor furniture and move the pieces around to see what flows best. A coffee table, chairs and a sofa are good places to start.

Don’t be afraid to try different set ups and take a step back to reevaluate.

If you need to add more built-in lighting or electrical outlets, it is best to contact a professional.

Quick Ways to Freshen Up Your Home For Fall

Maybe you’re getting ready to have guests over and you’d like to spruce things up, or you’re just in the mood to make changes without shelling out a ton of money or spending all weekend on projects. If you’ve already tidied up a bit and want to do a little something more, here are some easy ways to freshen up your home.

With fall and winter coming up, you’ll need more light. Head to the store and switch out your 60-watt bulbs with 3-way bulbs so that you can soften light in a room. While you’re at it, look for energy-efficient bulbs, which will cost more but last longer and use less electricity.

Update your accessories. No, not your scarves and hats—we’re talking couch pillows and mantelpiece décor. Take a look at what you already have in your closet and then take a quick run to the store—even the dollar store has great stuff. Add some festive fall pillows and a comfy throw on your couch and get some pinecones, pumpkins, or whatever your heart desires for your mantle. This can change for each holiday or season—so have fun with it.

Frame and display your kids’ drawings. If you have kids, this is probably something you’ve thought about but never got around to doing. Spruce up a bare wall with your kids’ fantastic art. It’s sweet and will bring a smile to guests’ faces.

Clean your carpets—especially if people are staying the night in those carpeted bedrooms. If you have a carpet cleaner, this will be easy and shouldn’t take more than a few hours. If you have to rent one, it will take up a little more time and you’ll have to shell out on average about $30-$40. Don’t worry about moving large pieces of furniture such as dressers—just shampoo the areas that can be seen and that you walk on. They’ll look like new!

Light Your Closet Without Wires

Posted on: August 16th, 2017 by Derek Barmer No Comments

How do you properly get dressed in the morning if you get up before the sun or you’re trying to keep the lights dim to let your spouse sleep in? Are you digging around in your closet while holding up your phone’s flashlight? It’s time to put in some quality closet lighting!

An insta bulb is battery-operated and totally wireless. You simply peel and stick it to the wall and pull a cord to turn it on.

A battery-operated motion-sensing LED ceiling light will automatically turn on, then off after a
bout 30 seconds. These can be easily installed within minutes and the only thing you’ll have to remember is to replace the batteries once in a while.

A tap light is another great option. This is turned on or off with a tape. It can be easily attached with screws or mounting tape. Some can be detached so they can be used as a portable emergency light.

LED strip lights can activate within a few feet and provide a linear look. These are great for very dark closets.

A puck light with a remote control will let you direct lighting to where you need it and you can use the remote from 15 feet away!

You can use a combination of the options mentioned for optimal lighting. Take a look at the other closets in your home after you work on the first closet. Don’t forget about your drawers and other nooks and crannies. Most of this lighting can be installed in those areas too.
