Surge Protection by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Surge Protection – Why is it important?power-strip

Earlier this week we talked about how you can prevent vampires by stopping the flow of electricity to your electronics when not in use. One way was to simply unplug each piece. The other way to do that was to plug your electronics into a power strip and to use the switch on the power strip to power all of the electronics off. So what is the difference between a power strip and a surge protector?

Power strips allow you to increase the number of plugs you can have that are served by one outlet in the wall. They also offer a convenient way to get power from the wall (and potentially behind furniture) to the area where you need it. They don’t offer any protection for power surges or if lightening runs into your home.

Surge protectors on the other hand offer you some degree of protection against fluctuations in the power supply, and even some protection against lightening. So, why is that important? Today’s electronics like televisions, DVD players and phones contain sensitive electronics that can be damaged by these fluctuations and surges. A surge protector will absorb the fluctuation in order to save the electronics. Surge protectors are a great idea for any high priced electronics. However, be aware that you will need to replace them annually. Many times they will absorb a surge and continue to work, so you need to replace frequently to ensure your electronics are protected.

Security Lighting by Central Carolina Air, Plumbing & Electric

Taking a Second Look at Security Lightinglighting exterior

We all know how it feels to get home after a long day at work, in the winter, only to realize that you forgot to leave the porch light on. Fumbling for the keys and trying to get them in the lock while juggling a cell phone, coat and umbrella is frustrating at best. But what if you had the convenience of motion sensitive lights that came on automatically? Or a lighted pathway that came on automatically whenever it got dark?

We often think about security lighting at our businesses, but rarely take time to consider our home outdoor lighting needs. At commercial locations, we recommend lighting the property well so that employees and visitors don’t trip over unseen obstacles, and to deter theft. The same holds true for our homes. Visitors to your home should be able to navigate from the driveway to the door safely. Good lighting design can provide adequate lighting that blends well with the surrounding area and enhances your home’s appeal.

Happy Birthday Elvis by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Happy Birthday to the King of Rock N Rollelvis

It has been nearly 40 years since Elvis Presley died and still over six hundred thousand visitors travel every year to Graceland, his Memphis home. It’s hard to believe, but had he lived Elvis would be 81 years old tomorrow. Born January 8, 1935 to a poor family in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis initially worked as a truck driver before hitting it big with “That’s All Right Mama”.

Elvis had a string of hits from the 1950s through the 1970s. He is best remembered for bringing forward rockabillly music that incorporated elements of country, bluegrass and gospel music. In addition, his showmanship on the stage set the crowds afire. Elvis went on to work on the big screen as an actor in the movie “Love Me Tender”. In 1958 he was inducted into the Army and served for two years. When he was released from service his popularity was nearly as high as when he left to serve. Few artists can claim that distinction.

New Year, New Goals by Central Carolina Air, Plumbing & Electic

new-years-goalsHow to Set New Year’s Goals

The start of the New Year has many of us thinking about the commitments that we will make in the new year to ourselves and others. You may be thinking about losing weight, going after a new position at work, starting your own business, eating better or spending more time with your partner or children. Whatever your goals, make sure that your goals are effective. One way is to make sure you set SMART goals. SMART goals were first described in the journal Management Review by George Doran, Arthur Miller, and James Cunningham in the early 1980s. SMART goals are:

  1. Specific – think about what you really want to achieve. Make sure your goals align with the desired outcome, and that they address specific areas that require effort in order to get to that outcome.
  2. Measurable – can you measure how well you are doing in achieving the goal? If you are able to see your progress toward the desired outcome, you are more likely to stick with the goal in the longer term.
  3. Attainable – make sure your goals are realistic while also being ambitious. You want to set goals that you know will require a lot of work, but are achievable. For instance, if you know you have five big projects at work in the coming year that will require lots of evening meetings, it may not be appropriate to set a goal of being home for dinner each night at 5 PM.
  4. Relevant – make sure your goals are rewarding. If you aren’t ready to tackle your goals, don’t set yourself up to fail. Instead look for other opportunities to move closer to your desired outcome.
  5. Time- bound – set a timeline for reaching your goals. We have all had the experience of setting goals that we just kept putting off until later. You may even want to add milestones to your goals to track your progress.

Holiday Travels by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

house as a giftKeeping Your Home Safe During Holiday Travels

The holiday season has officially started, and for many of us that includes plans to travel. Unfortunately, criminals know that many of us travel during this season, too. So, how can you keep your home safe while you are away? While there is no guarantee, there are a few simple things that you can do to try and deter criminals. Here are a few tips to keep your home safe while you are away:

  • Keep shrubs and bushes in front of windows trimmed so that burglars can’t hide behind them.
  • Keep several lamps and a radio on a timer so that they come on and off during the day. Or purchase a WiFi-enabled outlet and turn them on and off from wherever you are using your smartphone.
  • Stop your mail and newspapers as these are a sure fire way to broadcast that no one is home. Mail can be stopped by visiting usps.com.
  • Never broadcast on social media that you are traveling. Instead wait until you get home from your trip to post those pictures of the people and places you visited. Consider turning off locator services on social media if you plan to post while away.
  • Advise local law enforcement that you will be away and ask them to check your home periodically.
  • Participate in the buddy system with trusted neighbors. Agree to watch each other’s homes while either of you are away. A simple walk around the property can detect any problems early.
  • Leave exterior lights on during the night, and consider installing sensor lights that will come on automatically.
  • Keep holiday gifts out of sight of windows, and never put boxes out at the curbside that tip off criminals to high priced electronics in the home.

Follow these tips to deter criminals from your home this holiday season. We at Central Carolina want to encourage you to take a moment to nominate your favorite hero for our “Heat for Heroes” contest that begins today! We are giving a ceramic heater to 100 deserving heroes in our community.

The Holiday Season Made Easier by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electrical

christmas tree and giftsMake the Holiday Season Easier on You and Yours

We all have them.  That one person that is so hard to shop for.  You spend countless hours wondering what to get them, then days searching for just the right item.  Only to wonder, did they even like it?  Rather than spending all your free time stressing about it, and searching for the perfect napkin ring or knotted owl, how about considering some alternate gift ideas?

Gifts don’t have to be physical items.  There are many alternatives available in the market today.  Consider:

  • Give an experience. Instead of giving them another item that may end up in the closet, consider making a gift of an experience. You can give the gift of your time (especially if you are on a budget), or you can purchase a hot air balloon ride, or a ride in a racecar, or a spa day. Look on discount sites like Groupon or Living Social for inspiration and discount coupons.
  • Donate to the charity of their choice, with whom you can align your values. This one gets a little tricky. Make sure it is an organization they support, but don’t feel obligated to give to an organization that you can’t support. If in doubt, ask them what organizations they have given to in the past. Most people will share that information and you should be able to find one that appeals to both of you.
  • Close friends and family may consider volunteering together. This allows both of you to forego purchasing and giving gifts, while spending time together giving to the community. A day at the soup kitchen, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army or sorting toy drive gifts can invigorate your soul more than any gift you could purchase.
  • Make a small homemade gift that they will consume and enjoy. Look on popular sites like Etsy for inspiration or Pinterest to find recipes for hot cocoa mix, pancake mix, muffin mix, etc. Often, you can find cute, easy to make packaging ideas too. If crafts aren’t your thing, consider collaborating with a friend to develop gifts together – they do the packaging and you handle mixing the ingredients. People will appreciate your effort.

As Thanksgiving approaches, we want you to know how thankful we are for all of our customers – past, current and future.   One way we want to show our appreciation is through our “Heat for Heroes” contest that will begin in just a few days!  Nominate your favorite hero so that we can recognize them by giving them a ceramic heater.

Tips on Keeping Your Home Cooler During the Summer by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electrical

As we have said in earlier post, summer can wreak havoc on electric bills as AC units have to work harder and run longer to keep your home and even temperature. There are many things you can do to help keep your system working well and keep your home cooler. You can read our previous tips here.

Here are a few more tips for you to stay cooler and safe money on your bill:

  •  A ceiling fan will allow you to raise the thermostat setting about 4°F with no reduction in comfort
  • Install High-Reflectivity films on East and West facing windows to reflect additional heat gain
  • Keep lamps and electrical appliances (like TVs) away from your thermostat as their heat can cause your AC unit to run longer than necessary
  •  Using a crock pot to cook will cut down on heat distribution from the oven or stove
  • Add caulk or weatherstripping to seal air leaks around leaky doors and windows to keep cold air in and warm air out!
