DIY Backsplash Part 2

Posted on: July 5th, 2018 by Derek Barmer No Comments

In a previous post, we explained how to prep your kitchen walls so that they are ready to be tiled for an instant upgrade. Now that your walls are prepped, it’s time for the measuring. You’ll want to start at the focal point of the kitchen which is most often above the oven and under the hood vent. Since you’ll be buying and cutting the tile sheets yourself, you will want the least amount of cutting possible.

  • Starting above your stove, measure from the top down where you want the backsplash to stop.
  • At the mark you want the backsplash to stop, screw a scrap piece of wood that will create a level place where the tile will stop. The wood piece will also hold the tile in place while the adhesive dries. (This is for the central part of your wall above the oven, so there is no counter top to keep the tile in place while the adhesive is drying).
  • Find the center of the wall and mark a vertical line for the backsplash. Leave 1/8 inch of space around the junction of the tile and cabinets for expansion. At this point, there should be a horizontal wood board on the wall signifying where the tile stops, and a vertical center line in the middle of the wall.
  • Use a trowel and spread tile adhesive on the wall where you will tile. It’s best to do one portion of the wall at a time and wipe the trowel off with water to prevent the adhesive from drying.
  • Starting at the center line you drew on the wall, apply the first tile sheet and press it with your hand. Use a scrap piece of wood and mallet to firmly press on the tile. If there’s any problem with the tile sticking, this means the adhesive is too thick and you’ll need to scrape off some before re-applying the tile.
  • Use tile spacers to make sure the tile pieces are even, and also a lever throughout the process for precision.
  • Once the tiles have all been laid, allow them to set for 24 hours.
  • Apply grout to the tiles – working in a diagonal motion. After a few hours, wipe off any grout haze that is left on the tiles.
  • After three days, apply a sealant to the grout to prevent any stains.

Although this is a tedious process, the money saved and value added will make the project well worth it! You now have an upgraded kitchen and a new skill! Make sure that your kitchen is not only looking good, but operating efficiently. Call Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Electrical to check your kitchen faucet for leaks. We’ll fix any leaks and save you from expensive repairs down the road and potentially 200 gallons of wasted water per day!

What Flowers to Plant During Summer

Posted on: June 14th, 2018 by Derek Barmer No Comments

Summer is the season that yields the quickest growth for plants and flowers, which is probably not surprising considering the amount of sun and warmth they receive. The amount of water a flower or plant receives plays a critical role in its overall growth. Although some flowers may not get enough water, there is equally a concern that some flowers receive too much water. Look for signs as you tend to your own garden and its needs. If your flowers have brown petals that are starting to curl, they most likely need more water. If the petals are starting to droop, however, this sign shows that they are receiving too much water.  Consider an irrigation system in your yard and garden and allow us to help!

If you’re looking for a beautiful array of color in your garden, there are many flowers that you can plant during summer to provide that pop of color! We’ve listed just a few of our favorites:

  • Marigolds – it’s hard not to feel instantly better when looking at these vibrant warm orange and yellow flowers. Be sure to plant them in a place that receives lots of sunshine.
  • Lantanas – If you’re looking for a flower than comes in more colors than just orange and yellow, you may want to consider Lantanas. Their low-maintenance nature makes them appealing to many, and their array of colors comes in purple, pink, red, orange and yellow.
  • Verbenas – Need a flower that will spread and provide a sweeping effect? The Verbena is perfect for planting on retaining walls or in flower boxes or pots.
  • Gloriosa Daisy – Let’s not forget the Gloriosa Daisy, also known as the Black-Eyed Susan. They can reach up to 3 ½ feet tall and are ideal for planting at the back of garden beds so they don’t block the view of their smaller counterpart plants. With their orange petals and black center, the Black-Eyed Susans require full sun to reach their potential growth.

While you’re making your yard beautiful, don’t forget about the inside of your home as well.  The intense amount of heat during summer months is less than ideal for your air conditioner, if it’s not maintained for optimum efficiency. Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electrical can install a Power Ventilator in your home to save you money and provide cooling relief from the heat!  There may be heat trapped in your attic, forcing your air conditioning unit to work double time. The Power Ventilator will replace this hot air with the cooler air outside, saving you money and allowing your unit to run more efficiently!

Keeping Your Home Safe During Summer Storms

Posted on: June 8th, 2018 by Derek Barmer No Comments

In our previous post, we discussed how to keep your home safe during summer vacation. But have you given thought to how you will keep your home safe during the summer storms? Spring and summer bring the highest rate of storms, which can cause some serious property damage. Rest easy knowing that your home is protected and ready for any storms that may come your way, by following these suggested preventative measures!

  • Know where your shelter is – find the safest place in your home to hide out, during the event that there is a storm.
  • Create an emergency kit with necessities – and store it in the safe place where your family will hide out during a storm. A few of the items you should keep in the kit are non-perishable foods, a flashlight, water and extra clothes.
  • Keep routine maintenance on your roof and foundation.
  • Remove any trees or branches within close range of your home. These are major causes for property damage from high mile winds during the storms.
  • Avoid all metal – it’s also important to stay away from your phone, computer, and any electronics, if possible.
  • Close and secure all doors and windows.

Now that most of your home is protected, let’s make sure your air conditioning unit is also protected from flooding! Your AC unit may start to accumulate water, which is why there’s a device created to store the extra water, called a drain pan. There’s a possibility that your drain pan could become clogged, or even the drain line. Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electrical can install a micro “float” switch that will automatically shut your unit off if the drain pain accumulates water past a certain point. You can have peace of mind that not only your home is protected, but also your unit from any possible water damage.

Keeping Your Home Safe During Summer

Posted on: May 16th, 2018 by Derek Barmer No Comments

School is going to be out soon, which means vacation season is right around the corner. You and your family should be able to enjoy your time away, without worrying about intruders, or other problems at home. How do you ensure that your home is safe and secure to provide peace of mind while you’re away this summer? We’ve got a few tips!

Power off electronics. Eliminate any worry of overheated electronics by turning them all off.

Don’t forget the garage! Thieves often use a universal remote to open garages while home owners are away. Protect your garage from universal remotes by turning off the door.

Lock all doors, windows, and other access points like the cat or doggie doors. Do one final check through your whole home to make sure you don’t miss any windows.

Wait to post on social media. Don’t make it known to the world that you are currently away from your home. It may be a good idea to hold off on posting all your fun vacation pics until you’re back from your trip.

Ask a trusted friend or neighbor to check on your home. Although there is now the option to for your post office to hold your mail from 3-30 days, you’ll want someone to at least pick up any door flyers or the daily newspaper left at your home.

Keep blinds in their usual position so it doesn’t look like you’ve closed up your home to leave for a trip.

Use your app. If you have a home security app, put it to use by controlling things such as your water, appliances and lights.

Don’t hide a spare. Up to 50% of break ins are a result of a hidden key that has been found by burglars.

Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electrical can provide peace of mind as well, by performing thorough maintenance on your AC unit before you leave. You can rest assured that your family will come back from vacation to a cool and conditioned home!

How To Organize Your Home Pantry!

Posted on: April 17th, 2018 by Derek Barmer No Comments

Organizing your home pantry can seem like a daunting task at first. Once it’s done, however, you’ll be able to access anything you need with ease. Don’t know where or how to begin?

We’ll share some some easy-to-follow steps that will help you organize and maximize all the space in your kitchen pantry!

  • Put everything in clear containers and label each container. When everything has a home, you can find whatever you’re looking for quickly.
  • Take a weekly inventory count of your pantry (this will help with your grocery list – more on that later)
  • Create racks and storage units to add more shelves and space for your food. Sometimes the existing shelving units in your pantry don’t provide enough space. It’s time to add some more! Stacking storage units or adding more racks can instantly give you the pantry space you need.
  • Add a shower organizer to the back of the pantry door. The door can often be forgotten about when it comes to your pantry. By hanging a shower organizer, you now have a home for all of your spice jars!
  • Use skirt hangers to hold your chips and keep them from going stale
  • Create a chalkboard pantry door to note your shopping list. By having everything labeled, you can easily take inventory of what you have and what you need. Once inventory is taken, create a list on your pantry door for your next errand run.
  • Combine your packets in one spot. There’s nothing more frustrating than having to rummage around to find that extra seasoning packet to spice up your dinner for tonight! Save some time and effort by collecting any loose packets and placing them in one of the storage racks or units.

Having an organized pantry brings you one step closer to an organized and efficient home. Why stop there? Make sure your whole home is efficient! Call Central Carolina Air Conditioning and we’ll check your plumbing system – including your water heater, drain pipes, exposed hot and cold water lines, faucets for leaks and ventilation systems!

Ready for Spring Cleaning?

Posted on: March 29th, 2018 by Derek Barmer No Comments

With the first day of spring behind us, it’s that time of year again! Over the course of the winter months, your home has inevitably accumulated some dirt and is in need of spring cleaning. So, where do you start and what areas of your home need the most attention? The to-do list can seem daunting, and it may be tempting to put off. Your cleaning list will include quick tasks and some tasks that will require a little more time and attention. For starters, let some air fill your home by opening the windows!

This is the best time of year to go beyond the typical floor washing and vacuuming in your house. Let’s go over some of the uncommon chores that get overlooked the rest of the year. Ceiling Fans and vents are probably well overdue for a cleaning. Once these are cleaned, the walls and baseboards can get a good washing.    Although you may frequently wash your bedsheets, the mattress cover and pillows should also be washed at least once a year to get rid of any allergens. This is also a really good time to have your air conditioning unit serviced as we change out air filters to help keep allergies at bay.

Life gets busy, and most of the time it may seem hard enough to just get the kitchen cleaned.

If you can set one day aside to devote to the yearly clean-out, your whole home will look, feel and run cleanly and efficiently. After lots of wear and tear, your sofas may need some spot-cleaning or vacuuming. The lamps and ceiling fans in every room should also be dusted. Humidifiers can actually make your home sicker, if they aren’t cleaned occasionally – add this to your list of once-a-year cleaning.

Now is the time to pull everything out of your closets that you can toss, store for next year, or donate.

When it comes to the exterior of the home, it’s time to wash the thresholds and the siding of the home.  Make sure the doors and windows receive some TLC as well by giving them a good wash. Finally, in an effort to welcome springtime in the triad, sweep off your porch and walkways.

You’ll want to get your air conditioning unit serviced now before the dog days of summer start!  Let Central Carolina Air Conditioning Plumbing & Electric inspect and clean your A/C units to keep your unit in warranty and keep your family safe!  Preventative maintenance as important for your A/C unit as it is your car!  Read all the services we perform on your unit here.

How To Enjoy Spring in the Triad

Posted on: March 29th, 2018 by Derek Barmer 1 Comment

We’re blessed enough to live in the Triad – with the beach and mountains both within reasonable drive. Greensboro offers fun family activities all year round, but most especially during the spring and summer months. There are plenty of places to go and things to do outdoors and indoors as well, if that’s more your preference.

If you have appreciation for historic events, then you’ll love the rich historical experiences that Greensboro has to offer. The Guilford Courthouse National Military Park has both inside and outside areas to visit. The Visitor Center hosts artifacts and information on the famous battle, and there’s also a tour road for those looking to take an historic drive. Get a taste of culture by visiting the Greensboro Historical Museum, or the International Civil Rights Museum, located downtown. Also located downtown is the Children’s Museum. This is a great way for your children to expend energy on a rainy spring day.

One of the greatest things about springtime in the Triad is the ability to go fruit picking! There are multiple local farms in the area that enable you to pick your own blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, apples and peaches. With trees and flowers beginning to bloom, there’s no better time to take a stroll through the Bicentennial Gardens or the Greensboro Arboretum. The Benjamin Park and Bur-Mill Park also offer opportunity to get out and enjoy nature.

What better way to relax after an eventful day than to enjoy good food and drinks? Greensboro offers many options. Multiple breweries have recently popped up in the triad. Known for some incredible eateries, there are lots of eclectic options for eating in Greensboro. From fine dining to local hot spots – and cuisine to country fried, Greensboro can satisfy any taste buds.

Also remember Spring is a great time to have your air conditioning unit prepped for Summer! From changing air filters to get rid of dust mites to servicing your unit to keep it in warranty, we can easily and quickly keep your unit running efficiently.  We want to keep your family comfortable and safe this Spring!
