Surge Protection by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Surge Protection – Why is it important?power-strip

Earlier this week we talked about how you can prevent vampires by stopping the flow of electricity to your electronics when not in use. One way was to simply unplug each piece. The other way to do that was to plug your electronics into a power strip and to use the switch on the power strip to power all of the electronics off. So what is the difference between a power strip and a surge protector?

Power strips allow you to increase the number of plugs you can have that are served by one outlet in the wall. They also offer a convenient way to get power from the wall (and potentially behind furniture) to the area where you need it. They don’t offer any protection for power surges or if lightening runs into your home.

Surge protectors on the other hand offer you some degree of protection against fluctuations in the power supply, and even some protection against lightening. So, why is that important? Today’s electronics like televisions, DVD players and phones contain sensitive electronics that can be damaged by these fluctuations and surges. A surge protector will absorb the fluctuation in order to save the electronics. Surge protectors are a great idea for any high priced electronics. However, be aware that you will need to replace them annually. Many times they will absorb a surge and continue to work, so you need to replace frequently to ensure your electronics are protected.

Reduce Vampires by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Reducing Vampires by Unpluggingvampire

No, it isn’t Halloween, but there are indeed vampires in your home! We are not talking about the kind that bite you on the neck and suck your blood, but instead the ones that latch onto your wallet and take your cash! Electronics, even those that are turned off or in standby mode, can draw electricity when they are plugged in. They are referred to as ‘vampires’.

It is estimated that in the US we spend about $10 million annually to power these vampires. Want to see how much your appliances and electronics are using? Check out the graphic. So, what can you do to stop the vampires? No need for a wooden stake, instead:

  • Unplug appliances and electronics when not in use to prevent them from pulling electricity. Even the clocks on appliances can draw continuous power.
  • Or, plug them into a power strip and use the power strip on/off switch to cut the power off when you are not using the appliance or electronics.
  • Unplug chargers once batteries are fully charged on items like cell phones, laptops and battery chargers.
  • Use rechargeable batteries rather than disposables. You’ll save money in the long term and you won’t add to the landfill.

Re-purposing Furniturefurniture

Our theme this week is how to find new uses and purposes for old items. Think of it as an up-cycling celebration week here at Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Electrical! Some really cool things we have seen done recently include:

  • Using a dresser to make an entertainment center – let your imagination guide the way! Paint the dresser and remove drawers to make room for components or add baskets in place of the drawers for added hidden storage.
  • Use a cut down pallet to make a place to store shoes in a mudroom.
  • Use a French door as a ready-made frame for your favorite photos.
  • Turn a kitchen table over to make a four poster cat bed made for royalty.
  • Cut out the top and center top couple of drawers leaving bottom drawers in a dresser to create a bench with storage for a mudroom.
  • More ideas can be found on most popular social media sites like Pinterest. Let your imagination rule the day!

Antique Finds by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Antique Finds – How to Rewire a Lampblack lamp against blue wall

Do you enjoy searching through thrift stores, yard sales and consignment stores to find that unique piece that just makes the room? Maybe you found the perfect antique lamp, but found that for whatever reason it didn’t work. Here’s a secret – it is really easy fix!

First, purchase a lamp repair kit. They are available at most hardware and discount stores for less than $15. Next, assemble your tools. You will need an flathead screwdriver, your kit and a pair of pliers to help tighten connections. Make sure your lamp is unplugged and remove the existing cord and socket set. This varies according to each lamp style, but usually it will unscrew just below the harp base. Remove existing cord and set aside in case you need to reference it later.

Now the fun part – assembling the new lamp! Follow directions on the package as they may vary slightly. Basically you will insert the cord through the base to the top of the lamp. Then, you will remove the socket shell and insulating sleeve from the base. Make the wiring connections, taking care to tie the ends in a simple knot before connecting them. This will stabilize the connection. Reassemble, attach a harp and shade.

Installing a Peephole by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Installing a Peephole in your Door

We all know that a peephole can provide a lot of security. We teach our kids to never open the door until they know who is on the other side. But, if your front door does not have glass in it or side windows what do you do? Installing a peephole can solve this problem, and is relatively easy for most homeowners.

First, head to your local hardware store and purchase a peephole kit, along with a holesaw sized to accommodate the peephole. These circular saw bits will fit on your standard home drill. Just be sure to purchase the bit that is made to cut through the material your door is made of (metal, wood, etc.).

Follow instructions that come with the kit to install the peephole. A couple of tips to remember are to apply masking tape to the door before drilling with new blades to ensure you get a clean cut. Sandpaper can finish out the rough edges. If children or adults in wheelchairs regularly answer the door, consider installing a peephole at a height that better suits their needs.

Picking Paint by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

How to Pick Paint Colors for your Homeyellow paint

Often when we first purchase our home, we want to go in an repaint everything before we get all moved in and settled in. After all, who wants to move all the furniture again, tape off the trim and cover the floors? Why not do it all at once? While that is a great thing to do, unless you are going to pick one neutral color and paint it throughout the house, you will probably need to live through a couple of seasons to see the way the light plays on the walls, and interacts with your furniture and art before you can pick that color that makes your heart sing.

So, now that you’ve seen how the light interacts with the furniture and art, how do you decide? First, use popular social media sites like Pinterest or Houzz to find pictures of spaces and colors you like. Mark each one clearly so you can go back to it for reference. Narrow down your selections to less than seven colors. Head to your local paint shop and ask for paint chips. Bring them home and using painters tape, put them up on the walls. You may ask for more than one chip so you can look at the color on multiple walls. From there, narrow it down to just three to four colors. Purchase small cans of these paints and paint 24”x24” swatches on the wall so that you can ‘live’ with the color for at least a month to decide if you like it.

Once you have selected your color, don’t forget to select a trim color that accents the color and really makes it pop. Remember to take this opportunity to clean or replace switchplate covers, if needed. This added attention to detail will make your room really come to life!

Stress Free Super Bowl Party by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Electric

Hosting a Stress Free Super Bowl Partysb party

With the Super Bowl this weekend, many of us are gearing up to have a couple of friends over to watch the big game. So how can you be a great host, without stressing out? Here are a couple of tips to help you do just that:

  • Ask everyone to bring an appetizer to share – it is best to let your guests know in advance about how many people will attend so that they can plan accordingly as well as any food allergies.
  • Set up a self-serve drink station – grab a cooler or large tub and ice down beer, bottled water and sodas so that guests can serve themselves.
  • Limit alcoholic drink choices – this will not only simplify the time required to make drinks, but ensures that you don’t have to have a ton of mixers and garnishes. Choose one mixed drink that can be made either alcoholic or virgin. Provide ingredients and a recipe and allow guests to make their own.
  • Set up a self-serve food station – allow guests to serve themselves using disposable cutlery, plates and cups.
  • Place trashcans throughout the area guests will occupy – that way they can help with clean up.
  • When guests arrive write their name on their dish – use masking tape to writ their name on it in case it gets left behind.
  • If children will attend consider hiring a babysitter to help entertain them.

Finally, enjoy yourself. The Super Bowl is not meant to be a fussy event. Everyone just wants to enjoy watching the game and cheering on their favorite team.

Fridge Clean Out by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Fridge and Freezer Clean Outfrige

The holidays are long over and the Super Bowl is this Sunday. So what does that mean? Time to clean out the refrigerator and freezer. In our house, it is really easy to push those leftover containers to the back of the fridge and lose sight of them. Often, by the time we find them we dare not open the container but send the container straight to the trash.

Most refrigerators now have removable shelves and drawers that can easily be washed in the sink with a mild detergent. Consider lining your fridge shelves just like you would line your cabinets, but not with contact paper. Instead purchase refrigerator liner. Some products comes precut in standard dimensions, or you can purchase a roll and cut your own. Liners are available in plastic so that they can be wiped clean or even in durable fabric materials that can be machine washed. This will save time the next time you clean your fridge.

Throw out expired foods or those you know will not be consumed. It’s also a great time to replace the baking soda in the refrigerator and your produce preservative cartridge. If your appliance has a water filter consider changing it as well. Finally pull the condensation tray from under the bottom, empty and clean it. Vacuum any dust on the coils or vents if accessible.
