Spring Cleaning by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

While the Weather is Cold, Get a Jump on Spring Cleaning

Spring seems like a long way off, but now is a great time to get a jump start on some of your spring cleaning by cleaning your light fixtures and lamp shades. We often forget to clean our light fixtures until we are sitting at the table eating Easter dinner and look up and see cobwebs and dust all over the dining room chandelier.   Yikes! I hope no one looks up! And from that point on, it is the only thing you can look at!  Save yourself the trouble by taking some time now to clean it up.

Light fixtures should be turned off before removing covers. When in doubt, cut the power at the breaker. Remove the globe, cover or shade. Fabric shades can be gently brushed or vacuumed to remove dust and dirt. Glass and plastic components can be cleaned with a mild soap solution like dish detergent. Dry thoroughly before replacing. Metal fixtures can be cleaned with cleaning compounds made specifically for that metal. Be sure to test a small spot in an inconspicuous location before using any cleaner on the whole fixture. When dry, replace the cover. The brighter room will lift your spirit during the dreary days of winter.

Homeowner’s Manual by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Create Your Own Homeowner’s Manualorganization

Ever find yourself searching for that water heater warranty paperwork and receipt? And where is the name of that landscape designer? Who made the drapes for the dining room? With a couple of hours of time and a few simple supplies you can create a homeowners manual for your home!

Start by getting together your supplies. You will want an ample sized three ring binder (about 3 inches or so), plenty of sheet protectors, a set of index tabs (your tab number will vary depending on how many categories you want) and a three hole punch. While not required, it is nice to have a binder zip pouch, business card holder and slash pocket holders.

Next, decide how you will categorize your materials. Your imagination is the only limit. Some basic categories to consider:

  • Appliances
  • Furniture and fixtures
  • Service contracts and warranties
  • Homeowners insurance policies
  • Important contacts

You can use the three hole punch to insert most pages, but use sheet protectors to hold booklets and loose items like keys or special tools. Service contracts should be followed by a sheet that includes a place to note each time a service is performed, like an annual furnace inspection. When purchasing new items in the future, staple the receipt to the booklet or warranty paperwork and file appropriately. Slash pockets are great for catching materials until you are ready to put them in their proper place.

Water Heater Set Too High? by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Is Your Water Heater Thermostat Set Too High?water heater

On a frosty winter morning it feels so good to turn on that shower head and let it get nice and steamy before stepping in for the morning shower. But as comforting as a nice blistering shower sounds, we all know it can be painful if you aren’t careful. And it can hurt you in ways you don’t expect like in your wallet.

The thermostat on your hot water heater should be set at about 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Many manufacturers will set them at 140 degrees, but the risk at that temperature is scalding, particularly for children who may not realize the water is too hot until they are immersed. Some wonder about their dishwasher needing a higher temperature, but most dishwashers have booster heaters for this reason. Lowering it to 120 can save an estimated $10-30 annually for each 10 degree decrease in temperature.

The only risk by lowering the temperature is that bacteria can build up at the lower temperature, but most people in general good health do not have to worry. If you have a suppressed immune system or chronic respiratory problems consider keeping it at 140 but add mixing valves at each sink or shower to prevent scalding.

Celebrating Martin Luther King Daymlk

Martin Luther King day is an American federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of January each year. This holiday is in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday which is on January 15. King was known as the leader of the nonviolent civil rights movement that protested discrimination. The holiday was first observed in 1986.

The national Martin Luther King Day of Service was a result of legislation signed into law in 1994 that encourages everyone to honor King by providing citizen action volunteer service to their communities. Many universities participate in this program and offer special programs in honor of Dr. King.

Did you know? The Japanese city of Hiroshima and the Canadian city of Toronto both celebrate Martin Luther King Day as well, although not as a federal holiday as in the United States.

superbowl

The first world championship football game between the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL) was played on January 15, 1967. This game, which retroactively became known as Super Bowl I was between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers. Close to 62,000 people attended the game held at Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California.

The Green Bay Packers won the game with a score of 35 to the Kansas City Chiefs score of 10. The most valuable player was Bart Starr, the quarterback. The next year the Green Bay Packers defended their title by beating the Oakland Raiders in Miami. Bart Starr was selected as the MVP for that Super Bowl as well. Per NFL photos, tickets to Super Bowl I could be had for $10.

Security Lighting by Central Carolina Air, Plumbing & Electric

Taking a Second Look at Security Lightinglighting exterior

We all know how it feels to get home after a long day at work, in the winter, only to realize that you forgot to leave the porch light on. Fumbling for the keys and trying to get them in the lock while juggling a cell phone, coat and umbrella is frustrating at best. But what if you had the convenience of motion sensitive lights that came on automatically? Or a lighted pathway that came on automatically whenever it got dark?

We often think about security lighting at our businesses, but rarely take time to consider our home outdoor lighting needs. At commercial locations, we recommend lighting the property well so that employees and visitors don’t trip over unseen obstacles, and to deter theft. The same holds true for our homes. Visitors to your home should be able to navigate from the driveway to the door safely. Good lighting design can provide adequate lighting that blends well with the surrounding area and enhances your home’s appeal.

Happy Birthday Elvis by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Happy Birthday to the King of Rock N Rollelvis

It has been nearly 40 years since Elvis Presley died and still over six hundred thousand visitors travel every year to Graceland, his Memphis home. It’s hard to believe, but had he lived Elvis would be 81 years old tomorrow. Born January 8, 1935 to a poor family in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis initially worked as a truck driver before hitting it big with “That’s All Right Mama”.

Elvis had a string of hits from the 1950s through the 1970s. He is best remembered for bringing forward rockabillly music that incorporated elements of country, bluegrass and gospel music. In addition, his showmanship on the stage set the crowds afire. Elvis went on to work on the big screen as an actor in the movie “Love Me Tender”. In 1958 he was inducted into the Army and served for two years. When he was released from service his popularity was nearly as high as when he left to serve. Few artists can claim that distinction.

Holiday Decor by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

fragile boxOrganize Holiday Décor with These Tips

More than likely you have either begun to take down your holiday decorations, or are planning to do it soon. But before you pull out the boxes and tissue paper to start packing, take a minute to prepare and organize your decorations for the next season. Spending a little time now will make next year easier.

Consider how you are storing your Christmas décor. Are you keeping it in the original box? Maybe an old shoe box? Or a shopping bag? Plastic boxes that hold multiple ornaments can be purchased for less than $10 and often include cardboard dividers that can be adjusted to fit all ornament sizes and shapes. Look for bins in holiday colors to make them easy to find. Plastic bins are a great way to store all types of décor because they provide moisture protection and are sturdier than most cardboard boxes. If the décor items are mostly textile products, add a cedar ball or moth balls in order to keep pests out of the bin.

Strings of lights are perhaps the hardest holiday décor item to store because they become tangled so easily. Lights can be stored on specially made light reels that are sold at most retailers for less than $25. Alternatively, use a wire coat hanger to make a square form that you can wrap the light strands around.

Carefully clean any décor items before packing them away so that decorating will be easier the following season. Repair or replace any broken items and dispose of any items that you do not expect you will use again. Check carefully for worn or frayed cords on electrical items and either repair or replace.
