We’ve been discussing ways to keep your home safe while you’re on vacation this summer.

Tip #1 How to set your AC while on vacation

Tip #2 What to do with your water while on vacation

Tip #3 What to do about appliances, electronics and your smoke detectors

Tip #4 What to do with your mail

And today’s tip:

Tip #6 Don’t announce your vacation on social media! We now live in a world where everyone announces almost everything on social media and unfortunately this isn’t always a good thing.  Sadly, there are criminals that scan Facebook, Twitter and other channels looking to find out who is going to be out of town in your area. So be smart and wait until AFTER vacation is over to post pictures of your fun times!

Don’t let your mail pile up in your mailbox while you’re away on vacation! Be sure to ask a trusted friend or neighbor to get your mail daily if possible, including your newspapers! Nothing says “hey, we’re out of town!” like piled up newspapers in your driveway. If you are gone for more than a week, consider stopping your mail at the post office!

Also, instead of leaving your lights on throughout the house day and night, you can purchase a timer switch that can turn them off according to a schedule you set. That will indicate that people are coming and going throughout the day to anyone watching your home.

It’s also a good idea to alert the police department if you will be out of town for more than a week.  Sometimes they will agree to drive by to see if there is any unwanted activity as well!

We have been discussing ways to keep your home safe while you’re on vacation.

You can read here about how to set your Air Conditioning  and  read here about ways to avoid floods from leaks or breaks in your water line while you’re away.

You should also unplug all appliances, computers and televisions while you’re away. As we have talked about before in our articles about being energy efficient, when these items are plugged in, they are using electricity even if they aren’t turned on.

Also be sure to check the smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detector to make sure their batteries are still working. Leave your contact information and with a neighbor in case someone at home needs to contact you. Also give them the name of your plumber, electrician and heating and air conditioning provider in case of emergency should a problem happen while you’re away.

Think your house is ready for vacation while you’re away? Think again.

Earlier we posted about how to set your thermostat.

But did you know that you should turn off your water at the main valve as well? Lots of floods happen in the home when people are away. Many families lose all their belongings when water lines break and water floods their home!

Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Electrical and Plumbing will soon offer a home automation system where you can do all of this right from your phone! You’ll be able to just hit a button that is called “Vacation Mode” and all of this happens for you and it can turn on lights at certain times to make it look like someone is home.

But for now, remember to adjust that thermostat correctly AND turn off the water at the main water valve! Happy Vacationing!

Need maintenance on your Air Conditioning, Plumbing or Electric?  We would love to help! Give us a call at -800-461-3010.

Is Your Home Ready for Vacation by Central Carolina Air Conditioning Greensboro NC

While you might be ready for vacation, will your home be ready when you leave?  Most people don’t put enough thought into securing their home while they’re away!

Tip #1

Only turn your air conditioning up by 3-4 degrees at most! Most people think they should crank it up 10 degrees since no one will be home to enjoy it but this actually causes more stress on the unit when you return!

Letting the AC unit run consistently over a period of time on one temperature is actually more efficient in the long run and better on the environment and your wallet than turning it up and down drastically.

Stay tuned as we talk more about getting your home ready for vacation this month! Also be sure to check back for details about our big contest coming up!
